A detailed, clickable checklist for end-to-end Edge IoT research projects.

Define the Research Problem

Identify IoT application domain (e.g., healthcare, agriculture, industry)
Define research gap and formulate hypotheses
Survey literature and identify missing elements or limitations
Define key performance metrics (accuracy, latency, energy, bandwidth, privacy)
Establish novelty and research contribution

System and Architecture Design

Select edge hardware platforms (e.g., Raspberry Pi, Jetson, ESP32)
Design network topology and communication protocols (MQTT, CoAP, BLE, etc.)
Design end-to-end data flow and define system constraints (compute, energy, storage)
Create architecture diagram (device–edge–cloud hierarchy)
Incorporate privacy and security considerations (e.g., encryption, access control)

Data Management

Identify or collect IoT datasets (real-world, simulated, or hybrid)
Implement on-device preprocessing (filtering, feature extraction, compression)
Handle data labeling, synchronization, and temporal consistency
Partition data into training, validation, and test sets
Ensure secure and ethical data handling (anonymization, authorization)

Edge ML Model Design

Select ML/DL models suitable for constrained devices (TinyML, MobileNet, etc.)
Apply model optimization techniques (quantization, pruning, distillation)
Design collaborative or federated learning architectures if distributed
Simulate expected performance before deployment
Document model architecture, hyperparameters, and resource usage

Deployment and Experimentation

Implement deployment scripts (Docker, CI/CD, MQTT brokers)
Run controlled experiments varying edge node count, data volume, and network delay
Measure inference latency, energy consumption, accuracy, and bandwidth usage
Repeat experiments for reproducibility and collect logs
Implement fail-safe mechanisms and evaluate reliability

Performance Analysis and Benchmarking

Compare edge vs cloud performance baselines
Plot trade-offs (accuracy vs latency, energy vs communication)
Identify bottlenecks and scalability limits
Perform statistical validation of results
Discuss limitations and improvement scope

Reproducibility and Documentation

Use Git for version control and maintain code documentation
Document dependencies, hardware specs, and setup instructions
Provide scripts for data preprocessing, training, and evaluation
Publish open dataset or simulation code if possible

Writing the Research Paper

Structure paper: Abstract, Introduction, Related Work, Methods, Results, Conclusion
Highlight novelty and key contributions clearly
Include diagrams and experimental setup details
Summarize key findings and discuss limitations
Cite related works properly and ensure academic integrity

Review and Dissemination

Conduct internal peer review and proofread paper
Prepare poster or presentation for demo

Submit to journal/conference and follow up with reviewers
